Harissa - What is this common spice blend?

What is Harissa made of?

It's traditionally based on chilli, coriander and cumin seeds, garlic and salt, but many regional variations occur. Our blend is a fiery, spicy blend of garlic granules, mint, caraway, cayenne, coriander, cumin, chillies and salt, which is perfect for added heat and flavour to all kinds of dishes.

It's History and Culture

Pronounced "ha-riss-ah", Harissa is a key part of North African and Persian cuisine. In the current expanding interest in Middle eastern cooking it is becoming a staple part of a households spice cupboard.

In Arabic the name Harrisa means "to break" or "to pound into pieces". It is derived from the verb "harasa". The origin is thought to be from shoppers who would watch the spices pounded by the merchants as they waited in Tunisian markets.
